Name
The name Novi Sad means "New Plantation" (noun) in Serbian. As a meeting place of cultures and peoples, Novi Sad came to have many different names in various languages.

Novi Sad, Нови Сад is the capital of the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina, and the administrative centre of the South Bačka District.
According to the 2002 Census, Novi Sad is Serbia's second largest city, after Belgrade, with around 300,000 inhabitants.The city is located on the border of the Bačka and Srem regions, on the banks of the Danube river and Danube-Tisa-Danube Canal, while facing the northern slopes of Fruška Gora mountain.
Since it was founded in 1694, Novi Sad became the centre of Serbian culture and earned its nickname Serbian Athens. Today, Novi Sad is a large industrial and financial centre of the Serbian economy; and it is also one of the biggest construction sites in the region. |
Geography
Novi Sad's landscape is divided into two parts, one is situated in the Bačka region and another in the Syrmia region. The river Danube is a natural border between them. Bačka's side of the city lies on one of the southern lowest parts of Pannonian Plain, while Fruška Gora's side (Syrmia) is a horst mountain. Alluvial plains along Danube are well formed, especially on the left bank, in some parts 10 km from the river. A large part of Novi Sad lies on terrace deposit with an elevation of 80-83 m. The northern part of Fruška Gora is composed of massive landslide zones, but they are not active, except in the Ribnjak neighborhood (between Sremska Kamenica and Petrovaradin fortress).

Climate
Novi Sad has a moderate continental climate, with four seasons. Autumn is longer than spring, with long sunny and warm periods. Winter is not so severe, with an average of 22 days of sub-zero temperature. January is the coldest month, with an average temperature of -1.9 °C. Spring is usually short and rainy, while summer arrives abruptly.
The coldest temperature ever recorded in Novi Sad was -30.7°C (-19.3°F) on January 24, 1963; and the hottest temperature ever recorded was 41.6°C (110.8°F) on July 24, 2007.
The southeast-east wind Košava, which blows from the Carpathians and brings clear and dry weather, is characteristic of the local climate. It mostly blows in autumn and winter, in 2-3 days intervals. The average speed of Košava is 25-43 km per hour but certain strokes can reach up to 130 km/h. In winter time, followed by a snow storm, it can cause snowdrifts. Also it can cause temperatures to drop to around -30°C. |
Cityscape
IT (also known as State of EXIT) is an annual summer HYtrovaradin fortress of HYrbia. It is staged annually since 2000 and usually lasts four days (since 2003).
Held in the picturesque setting of an eighteenth century fortress by the HYvi Sad: HYšan Kovačević, and HYculty of Technical Sciences and HY Festival Awards 2007, together with HYFootball and basketball are the most popular participation team sports in Novi Sad. Cycling is also a very popular in Novi Sad. Novi Sad's flat terrain and extensive off-road paths in the mountainous part of town, in Fruška Gora is conducive to riding. Hundreds of commuters cycle the roads, bike lanes and bike paths daily. |

Roads
Novi Sad is connected by a highway to Belgrade to the south-east, and motorways to Subotica (north) and Zrenjanin (north-east). City has 369 km of roads (2004). One of the busiest roads in Novi Sad is certainly 3 km of Bulevar Oslobođenja. |
Public transport
The main public transportation system in Novi Sad consists of bus lines. In urban part of Novi Sad and Petrovaradin there are 17 bus lines, as well as 33 lines which connect villages and towns in Novi Sad and Petrovaradin municipalities, but also villages and towns in surrounding municipalities of Beočin, Temerin and Sremski Karlovci. Bus transportation is operated by JGSP Novi Sad. |

Bridges
As of 2005, there are 10 bridges in Novi Sad municipal area. Six bridges are over Danube-Tisa-Danube Canal, and four across Danube river. Through history, many bridges are built and then destroyed during many wars in this region. |
Radilway
The railway station is situated not far from the city centre (in Banatić neighborhood), and connects Novi Sad with major European cities, such as Vienna, Budapest, Kiev and Moscow; but also with major towns in Vojvodina, such as Subotica, Sombor, Bačka Topola, Vrbas, Zrenjanin, Inđija and Serbian capital, Belgrade. |

Shipping
Novi Sad has a commercial port on the banks of Danube and Danube-Tisa-Danube Canal named Luka Novi Sad. There is also a tourist port near Varadin Bridge in the city centre welcoming various river cruise vessels from across Europe. Novi Sad has several water-sports marinas near Ribarsko Ostrvo, Liman and Petrovaradin harbouring small sail boats and sporting/recreational vessels. |
Aviation
Novi Sad has one airport, Novi Sad-Čenej Airport, with grass surface and it is used for small aircraft, mainly for farming purposes. It is situated next to the suburb of Čenej, about 10 km north from Novi Sad. For international travel, there is Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, about 90 km south, an hour and a half drive from Novi Sad. |
